Sports & Entertainment

Sports events have long been a major source of entertainment in San Diego. Anchored by the San Diego Chargers of the National Football League and the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball, the city has a number of sports venues. Three Super Bowls have been played at Qualcomm Stadium (Jack Murphy Field), and San Diego annually hosts the Holiday Bowl and Poinsettia Bowl post-season college football games. Soccer is also a major sport, with two professional teams, San Diego Fusion and San Diego Gauchos.

The Professional Golfer’s Association of America stages one of its largest tournaments at the City of San Diego’s Torrey Pines Golf Course, one of the few municipally-owned courses the PGA tour visits.

Parks and museums offer relaxation, culture and fun to tourists and residents alike. Beautiful Balboa Park is home to many museums. The San Diego Zoo is world-renowned for its animal environment and breeding programs. Sea World offers up rollicking fun and the San Diego Aerospace Museum provides a look at the history of aviation. Star of India is a “tall ships” sailing vessel and a National Historic Landmark.

Restaurants follow the diversity of the culture and population, offering a wide range of cuisines from Mexican, Italian, French and Greek to Asian, Middle Eastern and Pacific Island. In addition to dining, San Diego’ brewing industry has 22 brewpubs, micro and specialty breweries, including three that are ranked among the top 10 breweries in the world.

Sightseeing, hiking, bicycling and aquatic sports provide additional avenues of fun and recreation. San Diego’s beautiful beaches and mild climate provide nearly year-round enjoyment. Nearby mountains and deserts also offer dramatic scenic beauty.

And a trip to San Diego would not be complete without a visit to the Hotel del Coronado, a National Historic Landmark on Coronado Island in San Diego Bay. The “del” as it is known locally, was built in 1888 and is the Number One wedding destination resort in America.
