San Diego’s business and industry profile is dominated by the presence of the world’s largest naval fleet. At its’ various facilities throughout San Diego County, the U.S. Navy employs some 42,000 military personnel and civilians, making it the largest employer in the region.

The U.S. Government employs an additional 38,700 and the State of California has 37,100 employees, ranking them second and third respectively on the list of top San Diego employers.

Health care facilities dominate the private sector, with Sharp HealthCare, Scripps Health and Kaiser Foundation as the top three employers. Qualcomm, Inc., the wireless company founded and headquartered in San Diego, tops the list of technology employers with more than 6,000 employees.

By industry, educational, health and social services have more than 239,000 workers, followed by professional, scientific, management and administrative categories with 164,000-plus and retailing with more than 139,000. Unemployment remains at less than 4 percent.

San Diego’s economy pumps out more than $118 billion annually, with military, government, health services, education and technology among the leading sectors.
